Care during COVID-19


Despite the current difficult circumstances surrounding COVID-19, and the subsequent lockdown, at Westerton Care Home we are working hard to keep everything as normal as possible for residents. We are pleased to remain free from COVID-19 at this time.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents and staff are always our top priorities, and our team are working around the clock to continue to provide the high levels of care as expected of our home. 

Here we have pulled together some answers to our most Frequently Asked Questions about our care during COVID-19. However, we are always happy to answer any individual queries you may have: please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Do you currently have COVID-19 in your home?
We are all doing well and are proud to say we do not have COVID-19 in our home.

Do you have enough PPE?
There has been a lot of media coverage about care homes not having enough PPE. To put your minds at ease, Westerton Care Home have no problems in getting PPE through our supply channels, and we also have support from the Social Care Partnership. We continue to monitor the situation daily.

Are you able to admit new residents into the home?

We are currently able to admit new residents into our home, following strict guidelines. As per the legislation, we would close to admissions when there is suspect or confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the home.

Am I now able to visit my loved one?
We were delighted to receive the green light for outdoor visits from 3rd July 2020, in line with recent guidance from the Scottish Government.

We have worked hard to protect the safety of our residents and our team, and will continue to do so as our priority.  We are currently in the process of updating our risk assessments and protocols to make sure visits are planned in a way which minimizes risk for everyone involved while ensuring an enjoyable experience.

What are your admission procedures?
Throughout this difficult time we will continue to safely admit new residents, with procedures in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our current residents and staff.  Any new admission from hospital will require to have 2 negative tests prior to the agreed admission date. Any other new admission will require to have at least one negative test. All new residents are isolated for 14 days.

The priority for us will always be to maintain safety. New guidelines have now been set in place around how we progress to admission and discharge, and we would always follow the guidelines to enable a safe transfer/discharge process.

How will you protect your staff?
The guidelines indicate that we monitor all staff for any symptomatic presentation daily. All staff have a good understanding of the characteristics of COVID-19 and its transmission and the principles of Infection Prevention and control.

What if we want to move our relative or bring them home?
We would ask you to think carefully about any decision, we would offer support and guidance around any implications around this decision and the affects to your relative, should you decide that this is the way you want to progress.   We would continue to support and guide where we can to offer other solutions.


Please continue to be reassured that all the actions we are taking, have taken, and will take in the future, have reflected the most current guidance and advice published by the UK Government and Public Health (Scotland).

The team have been providing your loved ones with social interaction by continuing to connect residents in creative ways. Whilst respecting social distancing guidance, we will continue to use technology platforms such as FaceTime and Skype to ensure the much-valued engagement continues.
