Remembering WWII at Westerton Care Home

We recently welcomed residents, families, and team members to a special World War II reminiscence event here at Westerton Care Home in Bearsden. It was an afternoon filled with conversation, reflection, and togetherness as we looked back on the experiences, stories, and remarkable resilience of the generation who lived through the war years.

The event began with a fascinating presentation from our visiting speaker, who brought a collection of wartime clothing, equipment, and memorabilia for everyone to explore. Residents were able to handle items from the era, try on authentic hats and uniforms, and learn more about how everyday life looked during the 1940s. Seeing these objects up close sparked so many memories, and before long the room was full of stories and recollections that were both moving and inspiring.

For many of our residents, the war shaped their early years and left a lasting impression on family life, community spirit, and the values they carry with them today. The afternoon gave everyone the chance to share personal reflections, from moments of hardship to experiences of hope, courage, and unity. These conversations reminded us just how much history and wisdom we are honoured to have within our home.

There was a wonderful sense of connection as residents chatted with each other, compared memories, and discussed how different life was during that time. Some spoke about ration books, air raid shelters, and the importance of community support, while others recalled songs, dances, and the small joys that kept spirits high. The atmosphere was warm and engaging, and it was clear how meaningful the session was for everyone involved.

Events like this play an important role in supporting wellbeing, encouraging reminiscence, and helping residents feel listened to and valued. Sharing memories can bring comfort, stimulate conversation, and strengthen relationships within the home. It was a privilege to hear so many heartfelt stories and to see residents connecting through their shared history.

We would like to thank our visiting speaker for bringing such an interesting collection to Westerton Care Home, and to our residents for their openness, warmth, and willingness to share their experiences. It truly was a memorable afternoon.
