Empowering Journey of Mrs H

In a heartwarming tale of determination and compassion, we're celebrating the remarkable journey of Mrs H, from visitor to resident, as she defies the odds with the unwavering support of the staff.

Mrs H initially stepped into Westerton Care Home as a visitor, accompanying her brother. However, fate had other plans as she herself became a permanent resident on April 7th, 2023. Despite facing the challenge of a hip fracture upon admission, Mrs H remained undeterred in her quest for mobility.

All of the staff here rallied around her, providing unwavering support to aid her recovery. Through their dedication and Mrs H's determination, she swiftly regained her independence and mobility, traversing the unit tirelessly throughout the day.

However, as a former visitor, concerns arose among the staff regarding the potential risk of Mrs H during trips outside the of our home. This prompted our Recreation Team Leader, Lorraine to get on a mission to establish trust and understanding with Mrs H.

Lorraine gradually nurtured a bond with Mrs H, recognising her liking for observing the world outside her window. Starting with small goals, Lorraine introduced Mrs H to the outdoor patios within our home, where she found solace in the embrace of fresh air and nature.

Despite Mrs H's struggle with verbal communication due to dementia and dysphagia, Lorraine's intuitive understanding of her facial expressions spoke volumes. As days passed, Mrs H eagerly awaited Lorraine's visits, signalling her desire to explore the outdoors.

With the support of Recreation Assistant Nicole, Lorraine took Mrs H to Knightswood Park, embarking on a serene stroll around the pond. Amongst the tranquil surroundings, Mrs H found comfort and serenity, her emotions overflowing as she expressed gratitude for the beauty surrounding her.

Returning to the home, Mrs H radiated contentment, eagerly sharing her day's adventures with fellow residents and staff. Lorraine immortalised the moments with printed photographs, igniting joy in Mrs H as she recounted her experiences.

Buoyed by the success of their outing, Lorraine now harbours confidence in Mrs H's ability to partake in future trips alongside her fellow residents, a testament to the power of empathy and companionship at Westerton Care Home.

Mrs H's journey stands as a beacon of resilience, reminding us all of the transformative impact of compassion and support in overcoming life's challenges and we're so proud to have been a part of it.
